28 Aug Apprentice Journal – Week 9: Haircuts & Homecoming Updo Practice

This week I got to expand my skills even further by working on precision haircuts and practicing special occasion styling just in time for homecoming season.

I worked on mannequins with both short and long hair, creating clean, polished bobs and refining my blowout techniques. For one mannequin, I focused on a smooth brunette bob finished with a sleek blowout, while another blonde mannequin was styled into soft, bouncy curls after a full color refresh. I also practiced styling long hair with smooth, shiny finishes to build my confidence in controlling shape and volume.

Alongside haircut practice, I spent time on homecoming updo training. I prepped curls and transformed them into soft, textured styles including loose braided buns and elegant twisted updos. Each look helped me sharpen my sectioning, pinning, and balance—skills that are so important for creating updos that last through a full evening of dancing and celebration.

Every week I’m noticing more confidence and control in my work, and it’s exciting to practice both foundational haircutting techniques and event-ready updos at the same time.
